on the Thai-Cambodia border, a small market town has sprung up since the Ban Leam - Daung border crossing opened up a few years ago, now it's a regular monthly stop for many visitors wishing to extend their stay in Thailand. Last year the Thai government toughened up the visa rules, so you can only stay in Thailand for 90 out of 180 days until you need to apply for a proper tourist visa, before this, foreigners would just get on a bus to the border for another 30 day stamp in their passport every month, now you can only do this for 3 months at a time.
